Company Website Development: 5. Define your website solution

Do you need to have your business website developed?

Define your website solution and save time and money by providing a full brief to your web developer.

This article is part of the Company Website Development Kit.

What solution do you need?

Almost anything you can imagine can be developed on your website. If you ask a web-developer to build a website for your business, you need to be more specific.

For example at Visual Link, we build websites from $295, but our advanced solutions are much more expensive!

We have listed here some questions you have to think about before asking a web-development quote. The more specific your brief is, the better quote you will get: the project will be built to your requirements with useful recommendations. You can save time and money!

What type of website do you want?

You have to precise if you want any special features in your website.

  • Do you want just an informative website to present your company?
  • Do you want to sell online with an e-commerce website?

Is there anything special you need? Make sure the developer you choose can do all these items you need, and which ones are the longest to complete. It will help you to identify the one that are really crucial for your website and the one you can cut off if the quotes you receive do not meet your budget.

  • A form
  • A blog
  • A booking system
  • An animation
  • A membership section
  • Store location
  • A directory, etc.
  • Do you want to update the content yourself on your website? (with a CMS)

What about the design?

There are two solutions for a website design:

  • Use a Template and customize it with your logo
  • Build a unique custom design in line with your brand identity

If you have any ideas in mind: share them with your web developer/designer to help him understand you vision. You can also refer to websites you like, but be precise about what features you like and make sure you are referring to a website within your budget. You developer can give you a feedback about it and better identify your needs. You can even do mockups if you have a precise idea but make sure you listen to your developer/designer recommendations as they are used to build websites on focusing on user experience.

Provide details

You will save time by providing details before the web-developer has to ask them. Here are some basic ideas that you have to think of:

  • How many pages do you need? What type of content will they contain?
  • What about social media? Are you interested in having them integrated in your website? How?

For ecommerce:

  • What type of product will you sell? How many?
  • Do you need to calculate the costs of shipping?
  • What type of payments do you want to be integrated? Do you want to receive the money directly on your account or is it fine for you to receive it on a Paypal account?

Once you have written your brief, you can send it to web-developers to get a quote for your project.

The web developer you chose will help you for your next step, but it can still be useful to know some stuffs about: Hosting your website, our next week’s topic.
